united states hopes that palestine will be a member of the united nations general assembly and america's latest actions are really seen as backtracking and palestinian officials have even referred to what the united states is doing now as a stab in the back because we know that the u.s. has made it clear that any united nations security council decision or resolution recognizing palestine as a sovereign state would be vetoed by the united states and of course with the u.s. veto this is a decision that could not be passed through the security council we have also heard throughout the last days that it's possible that palestine will try to go through the united nations general assembly now the way that is different from i resolutely of the security council is that it would not give palestine as much of a strong status as a recognized state within the international community but more of a non member observer but this is something that palestine still deems very important because it would get access to united nation institutions and this is something that we know is really. the united states
